A trip to the swimming pool is good for your circulation with lifeguard recertification, gentle on your joints, and it can also increase your appetite.
Circuit
Swimming is good circuit training, but only if you get up to speed – because it is possible to lie and splash around in the water without doing much. But if you swim against others or compete against yourself, both your heart and lungs will have to work hard.
Combustion
If you put in a serious effort in the swimming pool, a swimming lesson is a good way to burn calories. A person of approximately 70 kg burns about 704 calories if swimming fast and 493 calories if the pace is slower.
Load
If you have injuries or bad knees, swimming is an ideal sport, because the water carries your weight and thus removes a lot of strain. On the other hand, this also means that swimming is not a good sport when it comes to preventing osteoporosis, as you need weight-bearing training here.
Muscles
A number of muscle groups are affected when you swim. Exactly which ones and how depends of course on which swimming style you choose. But regardless of how you swim, your core and back muscles will come to work with the aim of keeping you stable in the water, just as shoulder and arm muscles will help ensure that you emerge from the water. So will your hips and the muscles in your buttocks, while they will also ensure you stability.
Appetite
Some of us have experienced being extremely hungry after a trip to the swimming pool, which oddly enough is due to the fact that the body does not get as much strain as it does during running, where the blood moves to a greater extent from the gastrointestinal system and to the muscles, and therefore pauses digestion. This means that the food is still being digested when you swim, and therefore you are also hungrier when you finish the swim.
In sea water
Most people enjoy swimming in the sea and are happy about it. Winter bathers are in a particularly good mood. The explanation is, among other things, the cocktail of endorphins and adrenaline they get shot into the blood. Water is a natural element for us. We were surrounded by it throughout the fetal stage and pregnancy. When we are in the sea water, the skin is massaged and we get a feeling of lightness and weightlessness by moving around. When you swim outside, you get a total nature experience with fresh air and sunshine.
Stress level
For people who grew up swimming and are used to moving in water, swimming will be relaxing and for some almost meditative. For others, who are not quite good with water or have to learn to swim first, it can be very stressful and perhaps almost anxiety-provoking. However, once you feel comfortable in the water, you will likely find that it has a beneficial effect on stress.
When you swim breaststroke?
When you swim, you use your abdominal muscles, lower back muscles, upper back muscles, buttocks, hamstrings, shoulder muscles, biceps and forearm muscles. When you swim breaststroke, the most technically demanding discipline, it is especially the pectoral muscles, the latissimus dorsi, the gluteal muscles and the quadriceps that are activated and trained.
When you crawl?
The crawl primarily activates your shoulder muscles, abs, forearms, upper back and hip flexors. In the back crawl, you use the same muscles as in the crawl, but you stretch the chest muscles more and need to activate the lower abdominal muscles even more. Butterfly is the most physically demanding swimming discipline. It requires a strong lower back muscle and a very strong upper back. If you swim butterfly regularly, your shoulders and back become wider.
When you sprint?
It requires a lot of explosive training and really good technique to be able to swim fast. The heart must be able to pump outwards with a high pulse, so it requires a well-trained heart and circulatory system. The muscles must be good at training anaerobically and without oxygen. When you sprint, lactic acid is formed very quickly in the muscles. It gives a burning sensation. The body will have a very high energy turnover with universal lifeguard certificate. As with any exercise, where you are exercising intensely and near your maximum performance, you will become out of breath and tired very quickly.
